TIP 6: DEVELOP PROPER RUNNING FORM

Did you know that proper running technique can change your running game? While many runners focus on areas such as frequency, length, endurance or speed, the practice of technique is often neglected. Developing a correct running form takes intentional work, but has been proven to increase efficiency and minimize the chance of injury. Because of this, it is important to utilize specific information that will help you determine what proper form looks and feels like. Here are five important tips to remember when working to develop a proper running form!

  • Run Tall: As you develop your running technique, it is important to remember to “Run Tall”.  The concept of running tall refers to running on the balls of the feet and toes rather than the heels. As you begin progressing in this, you will find that your body will lean forward less and feel as if it is barely touching the ground.
  • Don’t Look Down: When improving your running technique, one easy rule to remember is to never look down at your feet. As you keep your focus towards the horizon, you will enjoy the exercise more and be able to better focus on your goals.
  • Watch Your Shoulders: In order for you to maintain proper running posture, it is important to keep the shoulders relaxed when running. Shoulders play a key part in keeping the body relaxed and should remain low and loose rather than high and tight. If you feel tension when running, take the time to shake the tension out of your shoulders!
  • Notice Your Arms:  Did you know that when you run, your arms help you move faster or slower? While most runners focus on their leg stride to improve overall efficiency, arm swing is commonly neglected. Becoming conscious about bending your elbows within the 80-100 degree range, relaxing your hands, and focusing on arm drive can help your running posture tremendously.
  • Observe Your Posture: When running, focus on keeping your posture straight and erect. During your running routines, your head should be held up high with your back straight. As you get fatigued it is important not to lean forward or back, but to stay focused on standing straight. As you get tired and feel more prone to slump, be intentional about checking your overall posture!

This week as you continue in your running endeavors, make sure to be intentional about following the above tips, and working to develop the best running form possible!
