TIP 7: KEEP IT FUN

The tip for week 7 of your running journey is to make sure to keep your training fun! While training can be hard work that takes time, diligence and effort, it is also something that can be enjoyable. There are many different things that can be done to make exercise new and exciting. Here are a few things that may work for you!

  • Create a Playlist

Because music has a way of literally moving us, creating a fun playlist can be a great way to make your exercise journey more enjoyable.  Research suggests that music can make running both faster and easier. In addition, music has a way of elevating your mood and making the training process more pleasant! Create a list of your favorite songs, and see how it changes your exercise routine!

  • Grab a Friend

If you are looking to make exercise more enjoyable, finding a buddy to run with can make all the difference.  The communication that comes with a partnership often creates a fun environment to exercise in. In addition, running friends can provide a sense of accountability as you develop further into your training! Having someone to check in with each day can keep you on track with your goals, and make it easier not to quit. Think of the friends that you have, and reach out to someone that may be a great partner for you!

  • Change Your Route

Another great way to make your training more enjoyable is to change your route! If you have been walking or running on the same course each day, try changing it up. Moving to a new environment or location can make exercising more fun. If you regularly exercise in a gym, try running outside. If you find yourself running on the same route in your neighborhood, research a new trail or path near you.  Being intentional about changing your exercise environment can make a huge difference!

  • Define Your Goal

Do you have a goal or purpose for your training?  Whether your target is to lose ten pounds, complete your first 5K or to improve a running time, setting a specific goal or purpose will make your running journey more meaningful. Giving yourself purpose and reflecting on what your goal means to you will make it easier to push yourself further each day.

  • Words of Encouragement

Encouragement can be a game changer when working towards something that is difficult.  As you exercise, encouraging yourself can make the running process more uplifting and enjoyable. Examples of this would be leaving yourself notes of encouragement or surrounding yourself with positive people to inspire your workouts. Staying encouraged and positive will make a huge difference in your training journey.

Whatever method you choose, make sure to be intentional about finding ways to make each day of training enjoyable and fun. Take the time this week to think about simple ways to change up your regular routine. Sometimes the smallest thing can make the biggest difference!
