Volunteer activities have looked a little different over the last year, but that doesn’t mean our volunteers haven’t been hard at work. Our dedicated volunteers have given their time and heart to our mission, despite the recent restrictions and circumstances.

At our Inpatient Hospice Center in Ridgeland, our volunteers have been busy arranging flowers to be delivered to patients’ rooms every Monday. These flowers are faithfully donated each week by the Krogers in Dogwood, on Lake Harbour, in Colony Crossing, on Highway 51 in Madison, and by Fresh Market in Ridgeland. Our volunteers have also been monitoring our door for visitation every day during visiting hours, welcoming patients’ families and ensuring everyone’s safety during the pandemic.

In addition, some of our volunteers have helped make phone calls to each family after the loss of a loved one to provide emotional support and provide resource materials to help guide them through their journey of grief. Our volunteers have also assisted different departments with clerical work.

At our Brookhaven office, our volunteers have been hard at work in the recent months with helping complete administrative tasks in our office and getting back to providing patient care by sitting with a patient in their home to give their caregiver time to run errands or rest. The Willing Hearts Circle with King’s Daughters Hospital has been dedicated in securing our Brookhaven patients with handmade gowns after our provider shut down due to COVID-19. Over the last year, our Brookhaven volunteers have done a variety of activities to bring a smile to our patients despite not being able to physically visit with them, such as making homemade cards with words of encouragement.

During this year’s National Volunteer Month, Hospice Ministries extends our sincerest appreciation to each and every one of our wonderful volunteers for all that you do. Our team looks forward to the many more future volunteer activities and volunteer training to come in the near future. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact Natacia Storm (Ridgeland) at 601-898-1053 or Iris Waldrop (Brookhaven) at 601-835-1020 to learn more.
