Memorial Day
As Memorial Day is approaching around the corner, it is important to take the time to stop and examine the true meaning of what the holiday stands for. While picnics, barbecues, pool days, and other activities are often connected to Memorial Day, taking the time to reflect on its true meaning is important as we celebrate this monumental holiday!
Memorial Day is a holiday observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. The holiday (originally known as Decoration Day) originated in the years following the Civil War, and became an official holiday in 1971. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, less than 500,000 U.S World War II veterans are estimated to be alive today.
As we celebrate this important holiday, Hospice Ministries would like to say a special thank you to every man and woman who has sacrificially served our country. We are honored to have served numerous veterans since the opening of our doors in 1997. In gratitude, we take the opportunity with each veteran to express our appreciation for all that they have given within their military service.
One specific way that we enjoy serving our veterans is by our ‘We Honor Veterans’ ceremony. During this pinning ceremony, we take honor in presenting each veteran with a special certificate. By doing this, we are able to say thank you to each veteran for serving our country as they approach the hospice season of life. The ceremony takes place between the veteran, the veterans family, and the Hospice Ministries staff. This small intimate pinning ceremony is a special and unique way for Hospice Ministries to say thank you.
As you celebrate Memorial Day this year, take the time to thank the veterans in your own life, and remember the amazing men and women who have sacrificially given their lives so that we can live in a free nation every day.
