The story of Hospice Ministries, Inc., began in 1988 when Dr. Gerry Houston began discussing the potential of pioneering a not for profit hospice center in the Jackson metro area with Dan Broughton, a local home health business owner. During her time as practicing medical oncologist, Dr. Houston discovered that many patients with life-limiting illnesses were not given the special end of life care they needed. She found that while effective treatment was important, patients truly needed to be surrounded by family and things that they treasured. As a result, in 1989, Dr. Houston and Mr. Broughton combined their medical and business knowledge and started the Hospice of Central Mississippi, the first not for profit home hospice center in Central Mississippi.
A few years later in 1992, with the help of the Willing Hearts Circle of the Kings Daughter Medical Center, Hospice of Central Mississippi opened another center in Brookhaven.
In 1997, Hospice Ministries, Inc., was launched when Hospice of Central Mississippi joined Whispering Pines Hospice of South Jackson. With support from the community, Hospice Ministries officially opened a facility in Ridgeland. This facility includes housing capabilities for 40 inpatients.
For more than twenty years now, Hospice Ministries, Inc., meets the needs of patients and families with life-limiting illnesses. Hospice Ministries cares for patients and families where they are the most comfortable – at home, assisted living facilities, hospitals, and nursing homes. More than a thousand families a year experience Hospice Ministries, Inc.

My Dad was there in 2006. He passed away there free of pain. They kept him comfortable in his final days which was so important to me and my sisters. I definitely recommend Hospice Ministries for anyone’s loved one in their transition to the heavenly world.
Don’t think one can talk about Hospice Ministries without recognizing the immense contributions of Dr. Bill Causey. His passion for hospice care led many health care providers to support this philosophy of care!!
My own mother in law spent her last days at Hospice Ministries. She was surrounded by her children as she peacefully transitioned into eternity on New Years Eve of that year. Many people ask me “how can you do what you do day in and day out?”, my answer is always the same “how could I do anything else?…, this is what I was put here to do, God chose me to be a part of His work, I didn’t choose it, He chose me”
